One thread on this question has three answers at the top of it, and they point three different ways. The most upvoted says not to bother unless the plant is hydroponic or an air plant. The next says no plant enjoys a bathroom’s humidity swings, and adds that there is hardly any light in there anyway. The third says a pothos would be perfect.
The magazines are more confident and less useful. One large home title says plants can work in a shower if it is the right plant and the shower is set up correctly, without saying what either means. A plant app blog and a company that manufactures showers both answer with the same word: absolutely.
That exemption is why the question exists at all: a bathroom is the one room you may build with no daylight in it, so long as something moves the air. It traded the window for the fan before anyone thought about a plant.
And the fan turns out to be what the plant cares about too. With the fan off, more rows below land on Worth a try than on anything else, and that is the honest answer for a shower shelf: workable, not good. Only two things move it off workable, and one of them is the fan the code already made you install.
Here is the same question scored, and none of those three replies is arguing about the thing that decides it. One shelf, four variables taken one at a time, in the order of how much each one actually moves the number.
Which window the bathroom has is worth one point
A windowless shower scores 62. Give the room the best window it could have and it scores 63. Same shelf, same plant, same steam, and only the window changing.
The windowless shelf reads 397 lux, and that one point is the whole difference the window makes — smaller than most bathroom advice implies. North, east and west all land on 63; the south window is the only one that moves the number at all, and it moves it down, to 58. For a plant this tolerant the compass is not the question, and neither, it turns out, is the window.
The steam is worth nothing at all
The steam is the whole reason people want to do this, and it moves the score by nothing. Run the same shower from a dry room to a steam room — 40% up to 90% — and the verdict is worth a try at every level.
Six humidity levels, one verdict, because the light has already settled it. The second comment in that thread was half right: it named humidity swings and low light in the same breath, and only one of the two is doing anything. In a shower with no window you can run it like a steam room and the answer does not change.
The lists themselves say both halves, one after the other. The steam is always the reason given, and the light is always the condition attached to it.

Worth being straight about how that humidity run was scored, too. A real shower sits at the top of the range it covers for the minutes it is running and back at whatever the bathroom is for the rest of the day. Each level in the run was held steady rather than averaged, which is why the useful reading is the run as a whole rather than any single level.
The fan you already have is worth thirty-two
One thing has been held still through all of the above: the air. A shower cubicle with the door shut is about as still as indoor air gets. Here is what happens when it is not: still air 63, light air 89, medium air 95, strong air 89.
Those two numbers are not ours. Here they are with their source, next to what a study measured in five real bathrooms and what two extension services say a houseplant actually wants.

The measured bathrooms never were dry: they sat near eighty per cent before anyone turned the tap, rose about twelve points, and were back where they started once the fan had run. That is a smaller swing than the dry-room-to-steam-room range this page scores, and it moves the verdict by even less.
That is the same plant on the same shelf in the same light, and it is a bigger swing than changing the plant produced. The extractor fan is not only for the mirror. Air movement is the dimension people account for least, and a sealed cubicle is where its absence costs most.
So the order is: window, then air, then plant. Which is close to the reverse of how the question gets answered.
We scored every plant four bathroom lists recommend. Nine of twenty-two cleared
We read four bathroom-plant lists end to end on 2026-08-29 and wrote down every plant each one names — twelve, seventeen, eleven and thirty-one entries, twenty-two distinct plants once merged. Every one of them is in our own care data, so every one of them can be put on the same damp shelf and scored.
Nine of the twenty-two clear. The interesting part is which nine. Of the nine plants that three or more of the four lists agree on, only three clear; the peace lily scores 94 while the golden pothos and the heartleaf philodendron, named by all four, both sit at 63. Meanwhile the prayer plant and the blue star fern — one list each — score 93. One list recommends aloe vera, which scores 28.

Nine cleared with the fan off. Eighteen clear with it on. Twelve of the twenty-two sat on Worth a try in the first table; three do in the second. That is the same twenty-two plants and the same shelf — the switch on the wall moved more of them across the line than choosing a different plant ever could.
The pothos that got upvoted scores 63. So does roughly everything else people recommend for bathrooms: the snake plant 59, the spider plant 63, the ZZ 59. The three that clear are the ones nobody in the thread mentioned — prayer plant, Boston fern and peace lily, at 93, 93 and 94 — and they clear for the obvious reason, which is that a damp shower is one of the few places in a house where a plant that wants humidity actually gets it. The plants that suffer most in a dry living room are the ones with the most to gain here.

Water hitting the leaves directly, soap and shampoo landing on them, and a pot with no drainage sitting in a puddle. Those are real and none of them is a light, warmth, humidity or airflow reading, so nothing above sees them. The rest of the bathroom is a gentler problem than the cubicle, and the figures here are estimates built from window direction and distance on the same curated care data the app scores with.
